Kindle Newspapers

This week two new newspapers make it onto the Kindle - they are both British newspapers. The Times, which I don’t know an awful lot about, and the Financial Times which I adore and consider to be one of the best newspapers in the world.

The Times was first published in 1785 and is now owned by Rupert Murdoch’s News Corporation. The Financial Times has been in print since 1888 and its biggest competitor is The Wall Street Journal, while The Wall Street Journal has the higher subscription numbers, in my opinion the Financial Times has the superior content - I should know, Iv had it delivered to my home for the past four years.

The Times and the Financial Times bring the total numbers of newspapers on the Kindle to 24. Its been about 9 months since Kindle was released and I am a bit disappointed to see that only 24 newspapers have jumped onto the Kindle - 15 US based and 9 International newspapers. The USA Today currently has the widest circulation of any newspaper in the United States with 2.25 million copies per weekday, however it has yet to make an appearance on the Kindle. We need more newspapers on the Kindle!

The US Kindle Edition of Financial Times contains most articles found in the US print edition, but will not include tables, charts and stock quotes. It was announced today on the official Amazon Kindle blog that the Chicago Tribune will be available in the Kindle newspapers section for download. This brings the total number of newspapers on the Kindle to 21 and as always there is a free 14-day free trial.

Feedbooks.com — a site we have previously mentioned on this site –  has a new feature which allows Kindle users to download RSS feed directly onto the Kindle in a way creating your very own personal newspaper from multiple feeds.

It is a smart idea to provide feeds in an “offline” format for those times when your Kindle had no wireless signal.

One of the most interesting things to try once this feature is online will be to read a blook (blog+book), which is basically a serialized novel published on a blog. For the last 2 years, Lulu even created a Blooker Prize to award the best blooks. I’m not a huge fan of LCD screens for reading, but with an e-paper device on my hands, things are much different and I’ll probably start reading a few blooks and hope that I’ll find one that suits me pretty well.

Today Amazon announced that the Los Angeles Times will be the latest newspaper available for download on the Kindle, it joins The International Herald Tribune which was added a few days ago. This brings the total number of newspapers on the Kindle up to 20.

Los Angeles Times (Kindle Edition)

There hasn’t been much news regarding newspapers on Kindle, but Amazon has been silently adding more newspapers since the last time we covered newspapers on BlogKindle.com.

In February there were 14 newspapers available to download onto the Kindle, they were:

4. Investor’s Business Daily
5. The Boston Globe
6. San Francisco Chronicle
7. San Jose Mercury News
8. The Seattle Times
9. The Atlanta Journal-Constitution

14. The Philadelphia Inquirer

Since then, Amazon has added a further 5 newspaper titles:

1. Shanghai Daily - $5.99/month
2. The Independent - $14.99/month
3. Le Monde - $14.99/month
4. The Denver Post - $5.99/month
5. Austin American-Statesman - $5.99/month

There are 2 US based newspapers, and 3 international newspapers - all of them come with the standard 14-day free trial. Shanghai Daily at $5.99/month is a bargain and might be the one that is most worth checking out, however the other 2 international papers are very expensively priced at $14.99/month. My wish of having the Financial Times hasn’t come into fruition just yet, I have no doubt that one day it will be available on the Kindle - just not any-time soon.

Shanghai Daily (Kindle Edition)

Shanghai Daily provides an English window to the news of China. Business-focused, it also reports on social, cultural and diplomatic developments in Shanghai and the surrounding region.

Often controversial, it is also often parodied for its not so subtle political leanings. Boasting a readership of over a quarter of a million, The Independent asks, “It is. Are you?”

The Denver Post (Kindle Edition)

Today on the official Amazon Kindle blog, Amazon announced that The Boston Globe is available for Kindle. The Boston Globe (and Boston Sunday Globe) is the most widely circulated daily newspaper in Boston, Massachusetts and it is owned by The New York Times Company.

This brings the number of newspapers available on Kindle to 14. Whilst adding more newspapers is good, and undoubtedly over time we shall see more newspapers producing Kindle versions of their print editions, its seems to me that there are way too many east-coast newspapers, I would like to see some more west-coast papers make it onto Kindle. I would also like to see more foreign papers because they are clearly unrepresented, a dream for me would be the Financial Times which I read religiously. However I suspect we shall have to wait until Kindle’s international release before we see a substantial amount of foreign newspapers.

Amazon has just added two more newspapers to the selection of available newspapers, they are: Les Echos and The Philadelphia Inquirer.

This brings the total number of newspapers on offer to 13 (unlucky for some, apparently not to Amazon!), the 13 newspapers are;

I would personally like to see The Finiancial Times and The Los Angeles Times on the list. I really do hope that newspapers jump onto the Kindle, as traditional newspapers continue to lose circulation, Kindle might solve a few problems.
