Kindle Newspapers

You are currently browsing the archive for the Kindle Newspapers category.

This week two new newspapers make it onto the Kindle - they are both British newspapers. The Times, which I don’t know an awful lot about, and the Financial Times which I adore and consider to be one of the best newspapers in the world.

The Times was first published in 1785 and is now owned by Rupert Murdoch’s News Corporation. The Financial Times has been in print since 1888 and its biggest competitor is The Wall Street Journal, while The Wall Street Journal has the higher subscription numbers, in my opinion the Financial Times has the superior content - I should know, Iv had it delivered to my home for the past four years.

The Times and the Financial Times bring the total numbers of newspapers on the Kindle to 24. Its been about 9 months since Kindle was released and I am a bit disappointed to see that only 24 newspapers have jumped onto the Kindle - 15 US based and 9 International newspapers. The USA Today currently has the widest circulation of any newspaper in the United States with 2.25 million copies per weekday, however it has yet to make an appearance on the Kindle. We need more newspapers on the Kindle!

As usual, a 14-day free trial is available for both newspapers.

feedbooksFeedbooks.com — a site we have previously mentioned on this site –  has a new feature which allows Kindle users to download RSS feed directly onto the Kindle in a way creating your very own personal newspaper from multiple feeds.

From MobileRead forums by Hadrien;

Feedbooks provide an easy way for Kindle users to download and read RSS feeds directly on their device:

  1. You can create a file for a single feed: http://www.feedbooks.com/feed
  2. … or you can create a newspaper with multiple feeds: http://www.feedbooks.com/newspaper/create
  3. Generate a Mobipocket/Kindle file and transfer the file to your Kindle through USB or e-mail
  4. Once the file is on your Kindle, you can directly update your feeds inside the file, through the link on the cover or in the main menu of the file
  5. You can also subscribe to these feeds/newspapers from the main website and download those subscriptions from the mobile website: http://feedbooks.mobi

Here’s an example, just add this file on your Kindle to read the feed from Mobileread: http://www.feedbooks.com/feed/743.mobi

It is a smart idea to provide feeds in an “offline” format for those times when your Kindle had no wireless signal.

One of the most interesting things to try once this feature is online will be to read a blook (blog+book), which is basically a serialized novel published on a blog. For the last 2 years, Lulu even created a Blooker Prize to award the best blooks. I’m not a huge fan of LCD screens for reading, but with an e-paper device on my hands, things are much different and I’ll probably start reading a few blooks and hope that I’ll find one that suits me pretty well.

Create your own newspaper for you Kindle at Feedbooks: http://www.feedbooks.com/news. It will be interesting to keep your eye on this service and see how it evolves.

There hasn’t been much news regarding newspapers on Kindle, but Amazon has been silently adding more newspapers since the last time we covered newspapers on BlogKindle.com.

In February there were 14 newspapers available to download onto the Kindle, they were:

  1. The New York Times
  2. The Wall Street Journal
  3. The Washington Post
  4. Investor’s Business Daily
  5. The Boston Globe
  6. San Francisco Chronicle
  7. San Jose Mercury News
  8. The Seattle Times
  9. The Atlanta Journal-Constitution
  10. Le Monde
  11. The Irish Times
  12. Frankfurter Allgemeine
  13. Les Echos
  14. The Philadelphia Inquirer

Since then, Amazon has added a further 5 newspaper titles:

  1. Shanghai Daily - $5.99/month
  2. The Independent - $14.99/month
  3. Le Monde - $14.99/month
  4. The Denver Post - $5.99/month
  5. Austin American-Statesman - $5.99/month

There are 2 US based newspapers, and 3 international newspapers - all of them come with the standard 14-day free trial. Shanghai Daily at $5.99/month is a bargain and might be the one that is most worth checking out, however the other 2 international papers are very expensively priced at $14.99/month. My wish of having the Financial Times hasn’t come into fruition just yet, I have no doubt that one day it will be available on the Kindle - just not any-time soon.

Click on the title or image to visit the product page for each newspaper, you can sign up for the 14-day free trial from there.

Saturday and Sunday’s issues of Shanghai Daily are bundled together and delivered to Kindle on Saturday morning.

The Independent (Kindle Edition)

The Independent - Kindle EditionNicknamed the Indie and Sindie (for the Sunday edition), The Independent is one of Britain’s newest compact publications for the left of center, founded by three former journalists of The Daily Telegraph. Often controversial, it is also often parodied for its not so subtle political leanings. Boasting a readership of over a quarter of a million, The Independent asks, “It is. Are you?”

The Kindle Edition of The Independent contains articles found in the print edition, but will not include some images and tables. Also, some features such as the crossword puzzle, box scores and classifieds are not currently available. For your convenience, issues are automatically delivered wirelessly to your Kindle so you can read them each morning.

Le Monde (Kindle Edition)

Le Monde - Kindle EditionLe Monde, the leading French daily, is considered the country’s newspaper of record. Available in the French language, its global and intellectual focus covers the latest local and international news in sports, politics, sciences, culture, finances, shopping, and current events.

The Boston Globe (Kindle Edition)Today on the official Amazon Kindle blog, Amazon announced that The Boston Globe is available for Kindle. The Boston Globe (and Boston Sunday Globe) is the most widely circulated daily newspaper in Boston, Massachusetts and it is owned by The New York Times Company.

There are also no reviews on the page so maybe you can be the first? Here is the Product Description:

The Boston Globe is the most widely circulated daily newspaper in Boston, Massachusetts and in the greater New England region. Host to numerous Pulitzer Prizes, The Boston Globe features local, national, and world news, and features columns in news, arts and entertainment, business, sports, travel, life, and real estate. Notable contributors include Ty Burr, Ellen Goodman, Jeff Jacoby, John F. Kerry, Bob Ryan, and Dan Wasserman.

The Kindle Edition of The Boston Globe contains articles found in the print edition, but will not include some images and tables. Also, some features such as the crossword puzzle, box scores and classifieds are not currently available. For your convenience, issues are automatically delivered wirelessly to your Kindle so you can read them each morning.

This brings the number of newspapers available on Kindle to 14. Whilst adding more newspapers is good, and undoubtedly over time we shall see more newspapers producing Kindle versions of their print editions, its seems to me that there are way too many east-coast newspapers, I would like to see some more west-coast papers make it onto Kindle. I would also like to see more foreign papers because they are clearly unrepresented, a dream for me would be the Financial Times which I read religiously. However I suspect we shall have to wait until Kindle’s international release before we see a substantial amount of foreign newspapers.

So head on over to Amazon and start your 14-day free trial, what have you got to lose?
